How do I address a card?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Address a card the same way as a wedding invitation: use the guest's full name and title on the outer envelope, and a more personal name on the inner envelope if there is one. Write the address clearly, with the postcode on the last line, and include a return address on the back.

If you are sending a thank-you card, a save-the-date card, or any other wedding stationery, the same rules apply. Use the recipient's full name and title, for example Mr and Mrs David Brown, on the outer envelope. If the card has an inner envelope, you can write just first names or The Brown Family. For a single person, use their title and full name. For a couple with different surnames, write both names on separate lines. Always write the house number and street name on the second line, then the town, then the county if you wish, and finally the postcode on its own line. Use capital letters for the postcode. If you are sending a card to a family with children, write the parents' names on the outer envelope and the children's names on the inner envelope, or write and family after the parents' names. Make sure your handwriting is clear, or use printed labels if you prefer. If you are posting, weigh the card to avoid extra postage, and always put a return address on the back so it can be returned if needed.
