What is the etiquette for giving gifts at an engagement party?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests · For parents

Short answer

Gifts at an engagement party are optional and not expected. If you do bring one, keep it small and personal, like a bottle of something or a card, and never feel pressured to spend much.

Engagement party gifts are a lovely extra, not a requirement. The main purpose of the party is to celebrate the couple and their news, so your presence is the real gift. If you want to bring something, choose something modest and thoughtful: a bottle of their favourite drink, a small plant, a nice card with a warm message, or a little treat for them to enjoy together. Avoid anything large, expensive, or that might duplicate their wedding gift list.

If the couple has a gift list for the wedding already, do not buy from it for the engagement party. Save that for the wedding. Some couples say no gifts on the invitation, and if they do, please respect that. If you are unsure, a card is always safe and appreciated.

If you are hosting the engagement party as a parent or friend, you are not expected to give a separate gift, because hosting is your gift. For guests who want to give money, a small amount in a card is fine, but there is no rule about amounts. The etiquette is about thoughtfulness, not value. If you cannot afford a gift, do not worry at all. A warm hug and congratulations mean just as much.
