What is the etiquette for a second wedding gift?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

For a second wedding, guests are not expected to give a gift, especially if they already gave one for the first wedding. If you do give, a smaller or more personal gift is appropriate.

Second weddings are often more relaxed and smaller than first weddings. Many couples already have a home full of household items, so a traditional gift list may not be needed. Etiquette says that guests who attended the first wedding are not obliged to give again. If you do want to give, keep it modest and thoughtful.

Good options for a second wedding include a contribution to a honeymoon fund, a gift certificate for a meal out, or something personal like a framed photo from the ceremony. If the couple has children, a gift that includes the whole family can be lovely, such as a day out or a family board game.

If you are the couple, you can gently guide guests by not including a gift list with the invitation. If you do have a list, keep it small and optional. Many couples prefer to say, "No gifts, just your company." That is perfectly acceptable and often appreciated.

Remember that every couple and every guest is different. The best etiquette is kindness. A warm card and your presence are always the most important gifts.
