What are the acceptable etiquette practices for wedding gifts in 2026?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Guests may give cash, a gift from the couple's list, or a thoughtful present, and it is polite to bring it to the wedding or send it before the big day.

Etiquette around gifts has stayed largely the same. Guests choose what suits their budget and relationship with the couple. Many people now prefer giving money, especially if the couple already lives together or has saved for the wedding. Others still enjoy choosing a physical gift from a list so they know it will be used.

If you bring a present, bring it to the reception or send it to the couple's home. Some couples ask for gifts to be sent directly to them before the wedding, so follow any instructions on their invitation or website. Do not feel pressured to spend more than you can comfortably afford. Your presence is the main gift.

Regifting, returning, or asking for cash specifically is generally frowned upon. If the couple has a gift list, use it. If not, a card with a personal note is always welcome.
