Are you supposed to give a gift if you're in the wedding party?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

There is no rule that says you must give a gift if you are in the wedding party. Your time, support, and any costs you have covered are already a gift. Many bridesmaids and groomsmen still choose to give a small personal gift, but it is not an obligation.

Being in the wedding party already involves giving a great deal: your time, your energy, your presence at rehearsals and events, and often money for outfits, travel, and hen or stag dos. In the UK, etiquette is clear that you are not expected to also buy a wedding gift. Your role is the gift. Most couples understand this and would never expect a gift from their bridesmaids or groomsmen.

That said, many members of the wedding party do choose to give a small token. This might be a group gift from the whole bridal party, a sentimental item, or a contribution to a honeymoon fund. If you do give, keep it modest and personal. A framed photo of the two of you, a handwritten letter, or a small keepsake can mean more than an expensive present.

If you are the couple, do not expect gifts from your wedding party. Thank them publicly and privately for their support. If you are in the wedding party and you want to give something, do it because you want to, not because you feel pressured. Your presence and help are already a generous gift.
