Short answer
Parents should plan ahead, keep children comfortable and rested, and be ready to step away if things get too much. You are not expected to do it alone.
Being invited with your child is a kindness, but it does come with a quiet understanding. Arrive on time and help your child settle in. Keep them near you during the ceremony so there are no distractions, and think about nappy bags, snacks and a spare outfit in your coat pocket.
Most venues have a changing room or quiet corner. Use it if your little one needs a break. If they are tired or upset, leave quietly without apology. The couple will understand, and your child will be safer and calmer with you than in a crowd.
If you are unsure about dress, timing or whether there is a kids' menu, ask the couple early. They will usually be glad to answer. Do not feel you must entertain your child the whole evening. A short dance, a slice of cake and a goodnight hug are enough for most children.
