What is a standard wedding table size?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A standard wedding table is usually 6 feet long and 2.5 feet wide, seating 6 to 8 guests. Round tables are typically 5 feet in diameter, seating 8 to 10 guests.

Most wedding venues in the UK use either rectangular or round tables. A standard rectangular table is about 6 feet long and 2.5 feet wide. That comfortably seats 6 guests, or 8 if you squeeze a little. For round tables, the most common size is 5 feet in diameter, which seats 8 to 10 people. You will also see 6-foot round tables, which seat 10 to 12, but they take up more floor space.

Before you choose, check the room dimensions with your venue. Ask for a floor plan and measure the space between tables. You need at least 4 feet between tables so guests and waiting staff can move freely. If you are having a sit-down meal, allow about 2 feet of table edge per guest for plates, glasses and cutlery. For a buffet, you can seat guests more tightly because there is less on the table.

If you are mixing shapes, keep the same table height throughout. Standard height is about 30 inches, which works for most chairs. If you choose high tables, make sure you have high stools and enough leg room. Your caterer or venue coordinator can confirm the exact table sizes they provide, so ask before you plan your centrepieces and place settings.
