How far apart should tables be at a wedding reception?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Leave at least 90 to 120 centimetres between tables so guests and staff can move easily. For wheelchair access, allow more space. Check with your venue for fire safety.

The exact distance depends on your venue and layout. As a guide, leave about a metre between tables. This gives enough room for guests to pull out chairs, walk around, and for waiting staff to serve food. If you have a buffet or a dance floor nearby, leave a wider gap, around 120 centimetres, to avoid bottlenecks. For wheelchair users, you need at least 90 centimetres of clear width, but more is better.

Long tables need more space at the ends so people can get in and out. Round tables are easier to space evenly. Always ask your venue for their recommended layout. They know the room's dimensions, fire exits and any pillars or obstructions. You can also ask for a floor plan before the day so you can visualise the flow.

Avoid pushing tables too close together to fit more guests. Crowded tables make it hard for people to enjoy their meal and for staff to work. If you are short on space, consider using smaller tables or a different seating arrangement. The priority is comfort and safety. A good rule is to walk through the room yourself, pretending to pull out a chair and walk around. If it feels tight, it probably is too tight.
