Can you sit 10 people at an 8 foot table?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Yes, you can sit 10 people at an 8 foot table, but it will be snug. Standard 8 foot banquet tables are usually 30 inches wide and can fit five people per side. Each guest gets about 19 inches of space, which is workable but tight for large place settings.

An 8 foot table, which is about 244 centimetres long, can seat 10 people if you place five chairs on each long side. This gives each guest roughly 48 centimetres of elbow room. That is enough for a simple place setting with a plate, cutlery and glass, but not much else.

If you plan to have chargers, multiple glasses, large centrepieces or lots of shared dishes, it will feel crowded. You could reduce the number to eight or nine people for more comfort. Alternatively, use narrower place settings and keep the centrepiece small or at the ends of the table.

Consider the shape of your table. A round table of 5 or 6 feet in diameter often seats 8 to 10 more comfortably because guests face each other. For rectangular tables, you can also seat one person at each end, which gives 11 or 12 seats, but end seats can feel separate from the conversation.

Check with your caterer or venue about the actual table size and chair width. Some chairs are wider than others. If you are hiring tables, ask for the exact measurements. Always leave a little space between guests so they can get in and out without shuffling chairs too much.
