Short answer
For beginners, keep it simple: stand close, hold hands or place one hand on the shoulder and one on the waist, and sway side to side. Add a slow step-touch or a gentle box step. Practice in time with the music and look at each other.
The easiest first dance is simply swaying in place. Stand facing each other, with one partner's hands on the other's waist and the other's hands on the shoulders or around the neck. Rock gently from side to side, letting your bodies move together with the music. This works for almost any slow song and looks natural and intimate.
If you want a little more movement, try a step-touch. Step to the side with your left foot, then bring your right foot to meet it. Repeat in the other direction. This is easy to learn and keeps you moving around the floor. Another option is a basic box step: step forward with your left foot, bring your right foot beside it, then step back with your left foot and bring your right foot back. Count in your head: one, two, three, four. Keep your steps small and slow.
Practice at home in your bare feet or with the shoes you will wear. Put on your chosen song and just move. Do not worry about looking perfect. The most important thing is to smile and enjoy the moment. If you feel nervous, look at each other rather than at the guests. You can also take a short dance lesson, but it is not necessary. Many couples simply hold each other and sway, and that is completely fine. The first dance is about your connection, not about technique.
