What are some simple dance steps for beginners?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Start with the box step. Stand facing your partner, hold hands, and step forward, sideways, together, then back, sideways, together. Count slowly in fours and keep your steps small.

The box step is the foundation of most slow dances and it is easier than it looks. Imagine drawing a square on the floor with your feet. The leader steps forward with the left foot, then sideways with the right, then closes the left foot to the right. Then the leader steps back with the right foot, sideways with the left, and closes the right foot to the left. The follower mirrors those steps. Practise without music first, then add a slow song. Keep your knees soft and your steps small so you do not bump into each other.

Another simple move is the side-to-side sway. Just shift your weight from one foot to the other in time with the music, and turn gently on the spot. You can also add a simple turn: the leader raises one hand, and the follower walks under it in a small circle. Keep eye contact and smile. The most important thing is to stay relaxed and hold each other comfortably. If you lose the rhythm, stop, take a breath, and start again. Nobody will mind a pause, and most guests are watching the emotion, not the footwork.
