When should you start learning your first dance?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Start learning your first dance about six to eight weeks before the wedding. That gives you enough time to practise without feeling rushed. If you want lessons, book them early. If you are just swaying, a few rehearsals at home are enough.

Six to eight weeks is a comfortable window for most couples. It gives you time to learn a few simple steps, get used to dancing in your wedding shoes, and build confidence. If you are planning a choreographed routine with lifts or spins, start earlier, around ten to twelve weeks, so you have time to practise without pressure.

You do not need formal lessons unless you want them. Many couples learn from online videos or just practise in the living room. The most important thing is to practise in the shoes you will wear on the day, especially if the bride or groom is not used to heels. That avoids surprises on the night.

If you are having dance lessons, book them at least two months ahead. Most teachers can work with your song and level. Tell them if you are beginners, and they will keep it simple. You do not need to be a great dancer. A slow sway with eye contact is often more moving than a complicated routine.

Practise a few times a week for the first month, then more often in the final two weeks. On the day itself, do not overthink it. You have practised enough. Just enjoy the moment and let your muscle memory take over.
