What are the do's and don'ts for a wedding first dance?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Do choose a song you both love and practice a little. Do keep it simple if you are nervous. Don't feel pressured to perform a routine. Don't let it go on too long. Most guests enjoy a short, heartfelt dance more than a long, complicated one.

The first dance is your moment, so make it feel like you. Do pick a song that means something to both of you, and do practice at least once or twice so you know the basics. Do keep your movements simple, especially if you are not confident dancers. A gentle sway with a little spin is perfectly lovely.

Don't feel you must learn a choreographed routine. Unless you both genuinely enjoy dancing, a full performance can feel stressful and unnatural. Don't make the dance too long. Two minutes is plenty, and many couples ask their DJ to fade the song early. Don't worry about being watched. Guests are there to celebrate you, not to judge your footwork.

Do think about your dress or suit. If you are wearing a long dress, practice holding it up. If you are wearing heels, make sure you can move in them. Do have a backup plan if the song skips or the floor is slippery. A quick laugh and a restart is fine.

Finally, do decide in advance when other people join in. Some couples invite everyone onto the floor after the first verse. Others keep it just for themselves. Either way, make sure your DJ knows the plan.
