Is it okay to send wedding thank-you cards a year after the wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

A year is late, but it is far better than never. Send them as soon as you can, with a sincere apology for the delay. Most guests will understand, especially if the note is warm.

Sending thank-you cards a year after the wedding is not ideal, but it is not unforgivable. Life gets in the way. Illness, work, moving house, or simply feeling overwhelmed can push this task down the list. If you are at the one-year mark, do not let guilt stop you. Write the cards now. In each one, apologise briefly and honestly. Something like, "I am so sorry this is late, but your gift meant the world to us and we think of you often." Then move on to the thanks. Do not over-explain or make excuses. A short, genuine note is enough. Guests are more likely to be pleased to hear from you than annoyed about the delay. If you have lost track of who gave what, ask your gift list provider or check your records. If you cannot remember a specific gift, thank them for their presence and generosity. That is still kind. A year late is not a reason to skip the card. It is a reason to send it with extra warmth.
