How long after a wedding should thank you cards be sent?

The traditional rule is to send thank you cards within three months of the wedding. This gives you time to settle back into everyday life, sort through gifts and write personal messages without rushing. Many couples aim to send them within four to six weeks, which feels prompt and considerate.

If you received gifts before the wedding, such as at an engagement party or a pre wedding celebration, it is good practice to thank the giver within a few weeks of receiving that gift, rather than waiting until after the wedding. For gifts given on the day itself, the three month clock starts from the wedding day.

Life can get busy after a wedding, so it helps to set aside a little time each week to write a few cards. You could write them together as a couple, each taking half the guest list. If you are going on a honeymoon, factor that in and start writing when you return. It is better to send a card late than never, but do try to keep within the three month window. If you are very late, a brief apology such as "Sorry this is late, we wanted to thank you properly" is enough.
