How late can you send thank you cards?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

There is no cut-off point. Send them whenever you can, even if it is months or a year later. A late card is always better than no card at all.

You might worry that after a certain point it is too late to send a thank-you card. That point does not exist. Etiquette guides often mention three months as a target, but they do not say that after six months you should give up. The only real mistake is not sending anything. If you are well past the usual time, just send the cards. Do not wait for a perfect moment. Do not wait until you have written every single one. Send them in batches as you finish them. In each card, acknowledge the delay briefly and then thank the person sincerely. People are generally forgiving. They know weddings are busy and life is unpredictable. What they would not forgive is being forgotten. So send the card, however late. If you are worried about what to write, keep it simple. Thank them for coming, thank them for their gift, and share one small memory from the day. That personal touch matters more than timing. Once the cards are in the post, you can let the guilt go.
