What is written in nikah nama?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A nikah nama records the marriage contract, including the couple's names, the mahr, and witness signatures. It is a religious document and may not be legally binding on its own in England and Wales.

The nikah nama is the Islamic marriage contract. It records the essential terms of the marriage between you and your partner. Most versions include both of your full names, the name of your guardian if one is present, and the agreed mahr, which is the gift or payment the groom gives to the bride. It also lists the two witnesses who sign to confirm the ceremony took place.

The exact wording and layout vary by family, community and the person conducting the nikah. Some include prayers, verses and a space for additional conditions the couple wishes to set. Because content differs, ask the person leading the ceremony what will be written before you sign.

For UK legal purposes, a nikah alone is only legally binding if it takes place in a building registered for marriages with an authorised person present. Many couples hold a short civil ceremony at a register office or approved venue as well, so the marriage is recognised in law. Check GOV.UK or speak to the register office for the current position, and confirm any requirements with your place of worship.
