What documents are required for nikah nama?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

The nikah itself usually needs the couple's names and details, proof of identity and age, consent and the mahr, but exact requirements vary by tradition and officiant.

For the Islamic ceremony, the officiant typically needs clear identification for both partners. This may include passports, driving licences or birth certificates, and proof of age since both partners must be 18 or older to marry. You should also be able to confirm marital status, such as that neither person is already married, and show consent freely given by both the bride and the groom.

The contract itself records the mahr, the witnesses' names and signatures, and any agreed conditions. Some families also bring evidence of the bride's guardian's consent, though this depends on your school of thought and local custom.

If you also want legal recognition in the UK, separate official steps apply. In England and Wales both partners must give notice in person at their local register office, usually where they have lived for at least the last 7 days, and wait at least 28 full days before the ceremony. You will need two witnesses at the ceremony. Requirements can change, so check GOV.UK, your register office or your place of worship for the current position.
