What documents do you need for a notice of marriage?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

You need proof of identity, proof of where you live, and evidence of your marital status. For most couples this means a current passport or driving licence, a recent utility bill or bank statement, and either a birth certificate or a decree absolute if you have been married before.

When you book your appointment at the register office, bring original documents, not copies. Identity is usually shown with a passport or a full UK driving licence. Proof of address can be a gas, electricity or water bill, a bank statement or a council tax bill, all dated within the last three months. Your birth certificate proves who you are and your age. If either of you has been married before, you must also bring the decree absolute, dissolution decree or nullity decree, or the death certificate of a former spouse. If you were born outside the UK, you may need additional documents such as a visa or immigration status letter. The registrar will check every document and return them to you on the day.
