How do you give notice of marriage in England?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For grooms

Short answer

In England, both partners give notice in person at the local register office, usually where you have lived for at least the last seven days. You must do this at least 28 full days before your ceremony.

You and your partner each need to attend the register office in person. You cannot do it by post or online. The appointment usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and you will be asked questions about your identity, your address, and your intention to marry. You will need to bring proof of identity, such as a passport or driving licence, and proof of address, such as a utility bill or bank statement. If you have been married before, you may need to bring your decree absolute or a death certificate.

The notice is then displayed publicly at the register office for 28 full days. This is a legal requirement so that anyone with a lawful objection can come forward. If no objection is raised, you will be issued with a marriage schedule or document, which is signed on the day of your ceremony.

Your notice is valid for 12 months, so your wedding must take place within that year. If you are marrying in a Church of England or Church in Wales church, banns or a licence may be needed instead of or in addition to giving notice. For all other venues, including register offices, approved venues and registered religious buildings, notice is the standard route.

If you have lived in different areas, you may each give notice at your own local register office. Check with your local office for exact requirements, as they can vary.
