What happens at a notice of marriage appointment?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

At the appointment, you give your details to a registrar, who checks your identity and confirms you are free to marry. You both attend in person, and the registrar records your notice. It is a straightforward, formal meeting.

At the appointment, you and your partner meet a registrar at the register office where you have lived for at least the last seven days. You will each give your name, age, address, occupation and nationality, and confirm that you are not already married or in a civil partnership. The registrar will ask about the venue and date of your wedding, and will check your documents, such as your passport and proof of address.

The registrar will also confirm that you understand the legal requirements, including that you must marry within 12 months of giving notice. They will record your notice, and you will both sign the relevant paperwork. The meeting usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes, but it can vary depending on the office and how many people are there.

You should bring the correct documents with you. The registrar will tell you what you need when you book the appointment. If either of you is subject to immigration control, the process can take longer and may involve extra checks. For the most accurate and current guidance, check GOV.UK or contact your local register office before you attend.
