What happens after giving notice?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

After giving notice, you wait at least 28 full days before your ceremony can take place. Your details are then recorded for up to 12 months.

Once you have given notice at your local register office, a waiting period begins. This must be at least 28 full days before your ceremony. If either of you is subject to immigration control, this period can be longer, so allow extra time.

During this time, the register office may ask for more information or documents if anything is unclear. Once the waiting period passes, your notice is valid for 12 months. Your wedding must take place within that window, otherwise you will need to give notice again.

You will receive a marriage schedule or marriage document on the day of your ceremony. This is signed by you, your partner and your two witnesses. It is then returned to the register office, which issues your marriage certificate.

If you plan to marry in a religious building, you may also need banns or a licence. Rules vary by faith and location, so check with your place of worship and GOV.UK.
