What evidence do I need to give notice of marriage?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

You need evidence of your identity, nationality and address, and if you have been married before, evidence that the marriage or civil partnership has ended. Bring original documents, and check with your register office for their specific requirements.

The main evidence is your passport or other photo ID, plus proof of where you live. A recent bank statement, utility bill or tenancy agreement usually works. If you do not have a passport, a full driving licence may be accepted, but the register office will tell you what they accept.

If you have changed your name, bring the legal document that shows the change, such as a deed poll or marriage certificate. If you were born outside the UK, you may need your birth certificate and evidence of your immigration status. If you have been married before, you need the decree absolute, final order or death certificate of your former spouse.

Each register office can set its own rules on which documents are acceptable, and those rules can change. The safest step is to phone or email your local register office before the appointment and ask for their document checklist. Bring all originals, and do not rely on digital copies on your phone.
