How simple is nikah in Islam?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A nikah is often a simple and short ceremony, but its simplicity depends on local customs, family expectations and the requirements of your school of thought.

At its core, the nikah is a straightforward contract. It can take just a few minutes and usually involves an offer and acceptance, the agreement of the mahr, and the presence of witnesses. Many imams can conduct it with minimal preparation.

However, the surrounding arrangements often add time and detail. Families may plan a henna night, a separate reception, a walima feast, and travel for relatives. Some communities hold the ceremony in a mosque, a home or a hired hall, and may include speeches, Quran recitation and prayers.

If you also want the marriage to be legally recognised in England and Wales, you will need to follow the civil requirements. This may mean giving notice at a register office and having a separate legal ceremony, unless your nikah is held in a registered building with an authorised person.

Because customs and rules vary widely, talk to your imam and family about what you want. For legal details, check GOV.UK or your local register office.
