How is a nikah ceremony performed in Islam?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For guests

Short answer

A nikah is performed with the couple's consent, two adult witnesses, and a mahr, a gift from the groom to the bride. An imam or authorised person leads the ceremony, and the couple signs the marriage contract. The ceremony can be simple or elaborate.

The nikah ceremony is straightforward and focuses on the contract. The couple, or their guardians on their behalf, express their consent, often by saying "I accept" three times in front of witnesses. Two adult Muslim witnesses must be present, and in many traditions the bride's guardian, known as the wali, also plays a role. The groom gives the bride a mahr, which can be money, jewellery, or any agreed gift, and it becomes her property. The imam or authorised person recites prayers and may give a short sermon. The couple then signs the nikah nama, the marriage certificate. In the UK, if the ceremony takes place in a registered religious building with an authorised person, it is legally binding. If not, you will need a separate civil ceremony. The celebration afterwards, called a walima, is a feast hosted by the groom's family, though timing and customs vary. Some couples hold the walima on the same day, others later. The ceremony itself can be held at a mosque, a home, or a venue, and there is no fixed dress code, though modest attire is common.
