What is the mandap and what is its significance in a Hindu wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

The mandap is the ceremonial wedding canopy under which the couple stands during the Hindu ceremony. It marks the sacred space where the marriage vows and rituals take place.

The mandap is a four-pillared canopy that serves as the focal point of the Hindu wedding ceremony. It represents the four directions, the four aims of life, or the four parents, depending on the family tradition. The couple stands beneath it together while the priest leads the rituals and the fire ceremony, known as the hawan or agnihotra, burns nearby.

This sacred space is where the most important vows are exchanged. The seven steps around the fire, called saptapadi, are taken here, and each step represents a promise the couple makes to one another. The tying of the thali or mangalsutra often happens at the end of these steps.

For guests, the mandap is where you will focus your attention throughout the ceremony. It is usually decorated with flowers, marigolds, and fresh leaves. Families may add personal touches like fabric drapes or lanterns to match their wedding theme. The seating arrangement for close family often faces the mandap so everyone can share in the moment.
