Short answer
Step one, brainstorm what you love and promise. Step two, choose three to five commitments. Step three, draft your vows in your own voice. Step four, edit for length and clarity. Step five, practise aloud and check with your officiant or registrar.
Writing vows can feel daunting, but a clear process helps. Start by making two lists. The first list is about your partner: what you admire, what they do for you, and how they make you feel. The second list is about your promises: what you will do, how you will show up, and what you will never forget. Give yourself 20 minutes for each list and write freely without judging. Then step back and choose three to five promises that feel most important. You do not need to cover everything. Next, draft your vows as if you were speaking to your partner, not writing an essay. Use short sentences and your normal vocabulary. For example, "I promise to be your calm when life gets loud." After your first draft, read it aloud and cut anything that feels stiff or too long. Aim for around 50 to 100 words for public vows. Then check the rules for your ceremony. In England and Wales, civil registrars must approve your wording, and religious content is not allowed. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, rules vary, so ask your registrar or celebrant. Finally, practise reading your vows slowly, making eye contact, and breathing. Keep a copy with you on the day.
