Short answer
You can marry cheaply by keeping the guest list small, choosing a low-cost venue and doing simple legal steps yourself. Many couples save by skipping extras like fancy decorations or a big reception.
Start with the legal side. In England and Wales, you must give notice at your local register office at least 28 days before the ceremony, and you need two witnesses. A civil ceremony at a register office or an approved venue can be much cheaper than a large reception. Check GOV.UK for current fees and rules, since they can change.
Choose a venue that offers a simple package. A pub, a community hall or a park with a permit may cost less than a hotel. Some places let you bring your own food, drinks and decorations, which can save a lot.
Keep the guest list to the people you really want there. Fewer guests mean less food, drink and stationery. You can also skip extras like a wedding cake, a band or a photographer if you do not need them.
For a religious ceremony, ask about any fees and whether a shorter service is allowed. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, the rules are different, so check with the registrar or place of worship. A humanist ceremony may not be legally binding on its own in England and Wales, so you may need a separate civil ceremony.
