Who gives the bride away if there is no father?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides · For parents

Short answer

If there is no father, another family member or close friend can give the bride away. A mother, grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle or trusted friend are all common choices.

There is no legal requirement for a specific person to give the bride away. The role is about love and support, so anyone who means a lot to you can take it on.

Many people choose their mother, especially if she has been a main carer. Others pick a grandparent, a sibling, an aunt or an uncle. A close friend who has been there through thick and thin is also a wonderful choice.

You might also consider walking down the aisle with both parents, or having the whole bridal party walk with you. Some couples walk together alone, holding hands, to show they are starting this life as equals.

If you are worried about hurting feelings, talk openly with your family. Explain why you have chosen the person you have. Most people will be happy to support you in whatever way feels right.

Your ceremony should feel true to your family shape. There is no single right answer, and your wedding is about you and your partner.
