Is it hard to make your own wedding veil?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

It is not hard if you keep the design simple, but it does need care and patience. A plain, single-layer veil is a good first project.

Making your own veil is a lovely way to add something personal to your day. The difficulty depends mostly on the style you choose. A simple veil made from a single layer of tulle, with a comb or headband, is very achievable for a beginner. You will need to cut the fabric to length, finish the edges so they do not fray, and attach a comb or clip securely.

More complex veils can take longer. A multi-layer veil with different lengths needs each layer cut and finished separately. Adding lace trim, pearls or a birdcage netting face veil requires more skill and more time. If you are unsure about sewing, you can buy pre-finished tulle and just attach the comb.

Here are the main things to plan for:

  • Choose fabric that matches your dress and the venue
  • Decide on length, from fingertip to cathedral
  • Finish all edges neatly with a rolled hem or bias binding
  • Test the comb on your hair before the big day

Start early so you have time to fix any mistakes. A trial run lets you check the length and balance before the wedding.
