Short answer
A veil is a personal accessory that adds style, tradition and meaning to your wedding outfit. It has no legal or official purpose and is not required for the marriage to be valid.
Today the veil is mainly a fashion and symbolic choice. For some couples it connects them to family tradition, perhaps echoing a veil worn by a mother or grandmother. For others it is simply a beautiful finishing touch to the dress.
In some Christian traditions the veil has religious meaning, such as modesty or the moment of being joined. In civil ceremonies at a register office or approved venue, there is no religious requirement for a veil. Humanist and other non-religious ceremonies also treat it as a personal choice.
You might also think about how the veil works with your day. A long veil can look striking in photographs but may be heavy or awkward while dancing. A shorter veil is easier to move in and can be removed for the reception if you prefer. Whatever you choose, it is your wedding and your style.
