Short answer
Avoid soft, reactive or skin-irritating materials such as pure silver, copper, nickel, plated metals and cheap alloys. These can wear, tarnish or cause a rash with daily wear.
Your wedding ring will sit on your finger every day, so choose something that can take it. Pure silver is too soft for daily life and will scratch and bend quickly. Copper and nickel can react with sweat and soap, leaving a green mark on your skin or causing an itchy rash in some people. Cheap alloys and thin plating often flake or fade after a few months, leaving you with a ring that looks tired before your first anniversary.
You may also want to avoid very soft stones such as opals or pearls for a daily ring, since they scratch and chip easily. If you already own a ring with one of these materials, it can still be worn for special occasions, but a daily band should be more hardwearing.
If you have sensitive skin, ask the maker which metals are safe for you before you buy. Some people do fine with certain alloys, while others need a hypoallergenic option.
