Is it better to get a suit too big or too small?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For grooms · For parents

Short answer

It is better to have a suit that is slightly too big than one that is too small, because a tailor can take fabric in but cannot add it back. A well-fitted suit always looks sharper than an ill-fitting one.

A suit that fits well is the foundation of looking smart on your wedding day. If you must choose between two imperfect options, pick the larger one. A tailor can take in the waist, shorten sleeves and taper trousers with ease. Adding fabric to a jacket is rarely possible, so a too-small suit may need to be replaced entirely.

Focus on the key fit points first. The shoulders should sit flat without padding hanging over. The jacket should close comfortably without pulling. Sleeve length should show a little shirt cuff, usually around half an inch. Trousers should rest gently on your shoes without stacking heavily.

Book a fitting closer to the wedding date rather than months ahead. Your body may change slightly, and a final adjustment then will make sure everything sits right on the day. If you are hiring or borrowing a suit, ask the provider about their alteration policy before you commit.
