When should I buy a dress as a wedding guest?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Buy a guest dress around two to three months before the wedding. This gives time for delivery, any alterations, and a backup if the first choice does not work. For a summer wedding, start earlier, as popular styles sell out quickly.

Start browsing about four months before the wedding, but aim to buy by the two to three month mark. This leaves enough time for the dress to arrive, for you to try it on, and for any small alterations like hemming or taking in the waist. If you are ordering online, check the return window and order two sizes if you are unsure, then return the one that does not fit.

For a winter wedding, you might need a wrap or jacket, so buy those at the same time. For a summer wedding, lighter fabrics and bright colours go quickly, so order earlier. If you are buying from a high street shop, you can buy closer to the date, but give yourself at least six weeks for peace of mind.

Think about the dress code on the invitation. If it says black tie, choose a longer gown. If it says casual, a midi or tea length dress works. Avoid white or ivory, unless the couple has said otherwise. Also check the venue, a garden wedding may need block heels, and a church may need covered shoulders for the ceremony.
