Is it rude to ask bridesmaids to pay for their dress?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

It can feel like a lot to ask, but it is not rude if you are clear, kind and considerate from the start. Many bridesmaids in the UK do pay for their own outfit, so honesty about the cost matters most.

The key is communication. If you know your friends are on tight budgets, you can offer to pay for the dress yourself, or choose a style they can wear again. Some couples ask the bridal party to cover the dress but pay for shoes, hair and makeup. Others suggest a colour and let everyone buy from their own preferred shop so prices differ.

Be open about the likely cost before anyone commits. Say clearly who is paying for what, and give plenty of time to save or borrow. If someone says they cannot afford it, thank them honestly and offer an alternative, such as a simpler outfit or a different role. Never make anyone feel guilty.

  • Ask early and be clear about the budget
  • Offer to cover part or all of the cost
  • Choose a reusable style or a colour, not a fixed shop
  • Respect a 'no' without pressure
