Short answer
No number is too little. Having zero, one or two bridesmaids is completely acceptable in the UK. Many couples choose a small wedding party to keep things simple, save money and focus on the people who matter most.
There is no such thing as too few bridesmaids. You can have none at all, and that is perfectly normal. Some couples prefer to stand with just their partner and the two witnesses. Others choose one close friend or sister as a maid of honour and no one else. Both are fine.
Having a small number of bridesmaids can actually make your life easier. There are fewer outfits to coordinate, fewer gifts to buy, fewer opinions to manage and less stress on the day. It can also feel more personal, because each person you choose will know they are truly valued.
If you are worried about the sides looking uneven, you do not need to match numbers. Ushers and groomsmen can stand on both sides, or you can have bridesmaids on both sides. There is no rule that says the bride's side must equal the groom's side. You can also have a mixed wedding party, with friends of any gender standing with you.
The only thing to consider is practical support. If you have no bridesmaids, you may want to ask a friend or family member to help with small tasks on the day, like holding your bouquet or adjusting your dress. But that does not need to be a formal role. The legal side only needs two witnesses, and those can be anyone you choose.
