How many guests can you have at an elopement?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

There is no legal limit on guests for an elopement. In England and Wales you need at least two witnesses, in Scotland two witnesses aged 16 or over, and in Northern Ireland two witnesses too. Most elopements have between zero and ten guests, but the choice is yours.

The law only sets a minimum, not a maximum. You must have two witnesses present at the ceremony, and they must be able to sign the marriage schedule or document. In Scotland, witnesses must be aged 16 or over. You can have more guests if you want, but the spirit of an elopement is to keep things small.

Many couples choose to have just the two of them and the two witnesses, who might be the registrar's staff or two friends. Others invite parents, siblings, or a couple of close friends. A common approach is to have up to ten guests, so everyone can sit in a small room or stand close by. Some venues have minimum or maximum capacities, so check with your registrar or venue before you decide.

If you want a slightly larger gathering but still feel private, you could have a small ceremony with immediate family and then a separate celebration for wider friends later. That way you keep the intimate feel while still including the people you love. The key is to decide together what feels right for you, rather than feeling pressured by tradition.
