Short answer
In the UK, most engagements last between 12 and 18 months. That is long enough to plan without stress, but short enough to keep momentum. However, many couples choose shorter or longer, and all are normal.
There is no fixed rule for how long an engagement should last. In the UK, a typical engagement is around a year to eighteen months. That gives you time to plan the legal side, book a venue and sort out the details without feeling rushed. It also gives your guests time to save and arrange their own plans.
Shorter engagements of six to nine months can work well if you are organised, flexible and happy to make quick decisions. Longer engagements of two or three years are also common, especially if you are saving, studying or waiting for a family or work milestone. What matters is that the length feels right for you both.
Legally, the main thing to remember is that notice of marriage must be given at least 28 days before the ceremony in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and at least 29 days in Scotland. Your notice is valid for 12 months, so your wedding must happen within that time. For religious weddings, rules can vary, so check with your place of worship or register office.
Talk openly about your budget, your work and family commitments, and how much planning time you each want. Then choose a date that gives you both peace of mind, not pressure. There is no perfect length, only the one that works for you.
