Short answer
Send winter wedding invitations 8 to 12 weeks before the date, so guests can plan for weather and travel. For a December wedding, aim for early October.
For a winter wedding, give guests a little more time than you might in summer. Eight to twelve weeks ahead is a comfortable window. That lets people arrange warm clothing, book travel in poor weather, and sort out any childcare over the festive season.
If your wedding falls close to Christmas or New Year, send invitations even earlier, around 12 weeks, because diaries fill up fast and travel costs rise. You can also send a save-the-date card six months ahead, but that is optional.
Remember that your guests may need to book time off work or arrange accommodation in a busy season. A clear invitation with travel details and a suggested local hotel list helps. If you are asking for RSVPs, set the deadline at least four weeks before the wedding, so you can confirm numbers with your venue and caterer.
For a winter wedding, also mention whether the ceremony and reception are indoors or outdoors, and suggest warm layers or sturdy footwear if there is any outdoor element. This is a kind touch that guests will appreciate.
