When should you send wedding invitations for a small or intimate wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

For a small or intimate wedding, send invitations eight to ten weeks before the ceremony. Because your guest list is small, you can be more personal and flexible, but still give guests enough notice to arrange travel, accommodation and time off work.

A small wedding often means closer relationships with guests, so you may already know who can come before you send formal invitations. Still, sending invitations eight to ten weeks ahead is a good balance. It gives everyone time to plan without the pressure of a long lead-in.

With a smaller list, you can be more personal. You might hand-deliver invitations or send them with a handwritten note. This is also a lovely chance to include practical details like where to park, nearby places to stay, and whether children are welcome. Because numbers are small, you can be more flexible with RSVP dates, but do set a clear deadline, usually three to four weeks before the wedding.

If you are having a ceremony at a register office or a small venue, remember that you will need two witnesses. Let those guests know early if you would like them to take on that role. For a small wedding, it is also kind to tell guests if there will be no formal reception, or if it is just a meal, so they know what to expect.
