How do you word an RSVP card with meal choices?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

List each meal option clearly with a tick box or a line to write the choice next to each guest's name. Add a line for dietary needs. For example: "Please tick your choice: Chicken, Fish, Vegetarian, Vegan". Keep wording simple and polite.

When you include meal choices, make the card easy to fill in. Start with the guest's name, then list the options. You can use tick boxes, or you can ask guests to write their choice next to their name if they are replying for a partner. For example: "Name: ____. Please tick one: Chicken, Fish, Vegetarian, Vegan". If you have a set menu with no choice, you do not need this section at all.

If children are invited, you may want a separate line for their meal, or you can simply say "Children's meal: yes/no". Always include a line for allergies or dietary requirements, such as "Please note any allergies or dietary needs here". This is not just polite, it is practical.

Word the options in plain English. Avoid fancy names for dishes unless you also explain them. For example, "Roast chicken" is clearer than "Supreme of corn-fed chicken". If you are offering a fish option, say what it is. If you are offering a vegetarian or vegan option, say that clearly. If you have a special diet, such as halal or kosher, mention it on the card so guests know they can request it.

End with the reply date and the method of reply, just as you would on a standard RSVP card. Keep the tone warm and grateful, for example "We look forward to celebrating with you".
