How to word a wedding invitation with divorced parents?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

List each parent or set of parents on separate lines, using their current names, without 'and' between them if they are divorced. For example: 'Emma Smith and James Brown, together with their parents, invite you...'

When parents are divorced, the kindest approach is to name each parent or couple separately, avoiding any implication that they are together. You can list them as hosts in any order, often the parent who raised you first, or alphabetically. For example: 'Mary Smith and David Brown request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter Emma...' If both parents are hosting together, write: 'Mary Smith and David Brown' on separate lines. If step-parents are involved, include them: 'Mary Smith and John Smith, and David Brown and Sarah Brown, request the pleasure...' You can also use the couple's own names as hosts: 'Emma Smith and James Brown, together with their parents, invite you...' This avoids naming parents at all. If one parent is not hosting, you can simply omit their name, but be sensitive to family feelings. Another option is to write 'Together with their families' and then list all parents' names in a separate line or on the inside. Always use the names your parents currently use, including any remarried surnames. Check with each parent how they wish to be named. The goal is to honour everyone without awkwardness. If you are unsure, ask a close friend or the venue coordinator for a neutral opinion.
