How do you set a wedding table?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

Set a wedding table with a base layer, plates, cutlery, glassware and a napkin, then add personal touches like place cards and centrepieces. Arrange everything so each guest has enough space and a clear view across the table.

Start with a clean tablecloth or runner that hangs evenly on all sides. This creates a neat base and hides any marks on the table. Add a charger plate if you are using one, then place the main dinner plate in the centre in front of each chair.

Lay the cutlery on either side of the plate. Forks go on the left, knives and spoons on the right, with the blade of the knife facing the plate. Place the bread plate above the forks if you are serving bread. Put the water glass above the knife, and add wine glasses to the right if needed.

Fold the napkin neatly and place it on the plate or to the left of the forks. Add a place card with the guest's name so they can find their seat easily. Keep centrepieces low and small so people can talk across the table without leaning forward.

Do a final walk round to check that every setting is the same and that there is enough room for arms and elbows. If you have dietary requirements, mark those plates discreetly so the serving team knows which meal to serve.
