What is the etiquette for bringing a wedding gift to the ceremony or reception?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

You should not bring a physical gift to the ceremony or reception unless the couple has asked for it. Gifts are usually sent to the couple's home before the wedding, or given at the wedding if they have a gift table or box.

Carrying a large or fragile gift to a wedding is awkward for you and for the couple. They are busy greeting guests, taking photos and enjoying the day, and they do not want to worry about where to store your gift. The modern etiquette is to send gifts to the couple's home before the wedding, ideally a few weeks ahead. If you prefer to give the gift on the day, check the invitation or wedding website for instructions. Some couples set up a gift table or a card box at the reception, and that is the right place to leave your gift or card. Never hand a gift to the couple during the ceremony or while they are eating. If you are giving money or a gift card, put it in a card and place it in the card box, or give it to a member of the bridal party. If you are staying at the wedding venue, you can leave the gift in your room and give it to the couple later, but ask first.
