Short answer
There is no fixed number of wedding cake flavours. You can have one flavour for the whole cake, or a different flavour for each tier. Most couples choose between one and three flavours, but the only real limit is your baker's skill and your budget.
The number of flavours is entirely up to you. A single-tier cake with one flavour is simple and elegant, and it keeps costs down. A three-tier cake can have three different flavours, one for each tier, which gives guests a choice and adds excitement.
If you want more variety, you can ask for a cake with multiple tiers where each tier is split into two flavours. That gives you six options in a three-tier cake. Some bakers also offer a small 'taster' tier or a separate cutting cake with a different flavour from the main display cake.
Think about how the cake will be served. If you are having a plated dessert, one flavour is easier for the kitchen to manage. If guests are served from a buffet, multiple flavours work well. You should also consider how the flavours look together. A bright red velvet tier next to a pale vanilla tier can look striking, but it may clash with your colour scheme.
Talk to your baker early. They can advise on what is practical, how many servings you need, and how many flavours you can have without the cake becoming unwieldy. Tasting sessions are a lovely way to decide together. Remember, there is no rule that says you must have more than one flavour. A single, superb flavour is often the most memorable.
