How do I create my own backdrop?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

You can create your own backdrop using a large sheet of fabric, paper, or a painted board, then add decorations like flowers, balloons, or a personalised sign. Secure it to a frame or wall with clips or tape.

Start by choosing your base. A plain cotton or polyester sheet works well and can be washed or reused. You can also use a large roll of craft paper, which is easy to write on and fold away. For a sturdier option, use a wooden board or foam board that you can paint or cover with fabric.

Decide on a theme. For a wedding, you might want a simple colour that matches your palette, or a pattern like stripes, polka dots, or a floral print. You can paint your own design with fabric paint or acrylics, or use stencils for lettering. If you are not confident painting, use a projector to trace your design onto the fabric first.

Once your base is ready, add texture. Hang a garland of paper flowers, attach a string of fairy lights, or drape tulle or ribbon along the edges. A personalised sign with your names or a short message can be the focal point. Use a sturdy frame, such as a photography backdrop stand or a simple wooden frame, and secure the fabric with clips or binder clips.

Think about the floor too. A rug or a piece of fabric on the ground can make the backdrop look more finished. Test the backdrop before the wedding day to make sure it stands securely and looks good in photos.
