How do I build my own backdrop?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Build your own backdrop with a sturdy frame, fabric or paper, and weights or fixings. Use a pipe and drape stand, wooden poles, or a freestanding frame, then clip on your chosen material.

Start with a frame that will not blow over. A pipe and drape stand works well indoors and out. Wooden posts in weighted buckets are a cheaper option. For a wall, use a tension rod or hooks, but check you are allowed to fix into the wall first.

Drape fabric over the frame and secure it with clips or ties. A single length of fabric gives a clean look. For texture, layer two colours or add a sheer panel in front. If you want a printed design, order a custom banner and hang it from the frame.

Make sure the backdrop is tall enough for photos. Most people stand, so aim for at least head height. Weigh down the base with sandbags or water weights, especially outdoors. Test it before the wedding day so you know it is stable.

You can also build a simple wooden frame with timber and screw joints. Cover it with fabric or attach panels. Keep the design in keeping with your venue and colour scheme.
