How to create a custom backdrop?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

Start with a plain fabric or paper sheet in your colour scheme, then add layers like flowers, balloons, or a monogram. Use a sturdy frame or wall, and secure everything with clips or pins. Keep it simple so the focus stays on you.

Choose a base that is easy to work with, such as a cotton sheet, a roll of paper, or a piece of plywood. Stretch it tight over a freestanding frame or attach it to a wall with removable hooks. If you want texture, add a second layer of tulle or a sheer curtain in front of the base.

Next, decide on a theme. For a garden feel, attach silk or dried flowers along one corner. For a modern look, use large paper fans or geometric shapes in your wedding colours. A simple wooden arch or a circle hoop can frame the backdrop nicely. Use cable ties, string, or strong tape to fix items in place. Test everything a few days before so you can adjust.

Keep the design balanced but not too busy. You want guests to see you clearly in photos. If you are adding a sign, place it at the side or top, not where heads will be. Finally, check the lighting. If the venue is dark, add a few battery powered fairy lights around the edges to help the backdrop stand out.
