What is the typical order of a wedding day?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

The typical order is: getting ready, ceremony, drinks and photos, wedding breakfast, speeches, evening guests arrive, first dance, dancing and evening food, then a late send-off. You can adjust it, but this flow works well for most UK weddings.

A typical UK wedding day follows a clear order that helps everything run smoothly. It starts with the morning preparations, when you and your bridal party get ready, often with a light breakfast and some quiet time. Then you travel to the ceremony venue.

The ceremony comes next, usually in the early afternoon. After the ceremony, guests move to a drinks reception while you have your photographs taken. This is a relaxed hour or so with canapés and something to drink.

Then comes the wedding breakfast, which is the main meal. Speeches usually follow the meal, or sometimes between courses. The order of speeches is often: the host or parent, then the couple, then the best person. After the meal, the venue team clears the tables and sets up the dance floor.

Evening guests arrive around 7pm or 7.30pm. The first dance typically happens soon after, followed by dancing, an evening buffet and more music. The day often ends with a final song, a sparkler exit, or simply a natural wind-down around midnight.

You can change this order to suit you. Some couples have speeches before the meal, or do the first dance before evening guests arrive. The key is to communicate the order to your photographer, caterer and venue coordinator so everyone knows what is happening next.
