What is a wedding ceremony music timeline?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

A wedding ceremony music timeline is a schedule that shows when each piece of music will play during the ceremony. It runs from the prelude before guests arrive, through the processional, readings, signing, and recessional, with timings for each part.

A music timeline helps everyone involved know exactly what happens and when. It usually starts 15 to 20 minutes before the ceremony with the prelude, as guests are being seated. Then comes the processional, which might be split into two pieces, one for the bridal party and one for the couple, if you want a change of music. Allow two to three minutes for the entrance.

After the welcome and any opening words, you might have a reading or a hymn. Note the time for each, and whether music plays before or after. The signing of the register or schedule often takes five to ten minutes, so plan one or two pieces that fill that time comfortably. Then the recessional plays as you walk back down the aisle, followed by a short piece as guests exit.

Write the timeline as a list with approximate start times, for example 2.00pm prelude, 2.15pm processional, 2.25pm readings, 2.35pm signing, 2.45pm recessional. Share it with your musician, registrar and ushers. Keep it flexible, as ceremonies can run early or late.
